Tyrese Maxey scored a team-high 38 points to lead the Philadelphia 76ers to a 109-104 comeback victory against the Charlotte Hornets on Saturday night. The game, played in Charlotte, marked the Sixers’ sixth win in seven games this season. Maxey’s performance was especially notable as star players LeBron James and Joel Embiid were sidelined for rest and injury management.
Philadelphia trailed by as many as 13 points during the contest but rallied in the final quarter, with Maxey contributing 15 points in the period. The Sixers secured their fourth win of the season after overcoming double-digit deficits. Reflecting on the team's resilience, Maxey said the group possesses a strong competitive spirit and a refusal to concede defeat.
Anfernee Simons added 19 points off the bench, while Jaylen Brown contributed 16 for Philadelphia. In contrast, the Hornets received 27 points from reserve Grayson Allen and 24 from Brandon Miller, but their efforts fell short.
James, 41, missed the game due to lower back sciatica, and Embiid sat out with a sore right foot. Both players were rested following Friday’s victory over the New York Knicks.
The Sixers held a slim 57-54 lead at halftime, with Maxey scoring 19 points in the first half. Charlotte controlled much of the second half, but Maxey’s free throws with just over a minute remaining put Philadelphia ahead 102-101. Shortly thereafter, V.J. Edgecombe’s stepback three-pointer extended the lead to 105-101, and Maxey added two more free throws to secure a six-point cushion with less than 30 seconds left. Despite a late three from Miller that brought the Hornets closer, Brown’s free throws sealed the win for the visitors.
Elsewhere in the NBA, the Memphis Grizzlies maintained their perfect start to the season, improving to 6-0 with a 136-105 win over the Sacramento Kings. The Grizzlies were led by Cameroon Boozer, who scored 27 points. Sacramento’s Darius Acuff scored 38 in the losing effort.
