Bayer Leverkusen secured a 2-1 victory over Freiburg in the German Bundesliga on Sunday, with Ibrahim Maza and Patrik Schick each scoring to help the visitors come from behind. The win marks a positive recovery for Leverkusen, who stumbled in their season opener with an unexpected loss to newly promoted Elversberg.
Following Sunday’s result, Leverkusen have accumulated 13 points from a possible 18, lifting them to fourth place in the league standings. They are level on points with Freiburg, who occupy third place, but remain behind on goal difference.
Patrik Schick continued his impressive run by scoring his 14th-minute goal from time, becoming the first Leverkusen player to score in each of the first six Bundesliga matches of a season. His contribution proved decisive in overturning Freiburg’s early lead.
Freiburg, who had recently been displaced at the top of the table by Bayern Munich, will face the Bavarian club at home in their next league fixture. The match against Bayern follows its own dramatic weekend developments, including a dominant performance by the reigning champions against RB Leipzig on Saturday.
Speaking after the game, Algeria international Ibrahim Maza praised his team’s performance and their growing on-field partnership. “It was a lot of fun, especially against such a strong opponent. Huge respect to Freiburg but we showed what we can do,” he said. “Schicky and I are building some pretty good chemistry. The more time we spend playing together, the better it’s getting. It’s going pretty well right now.”
The result consolidates Leverkusen’s position among the Bundesliga’s early front-runners as the season progresses. Both teams remain contenders in what promises to be a closely contested title race.
