England head coach Brendon McCullum addressed speculation about his relationship with captain Ben Stokes following the latter’s recent absence from the squad. Stokes, alongside fast bowler Gus Atkinson, returned to the team’s training session at Trent Bridge on Wednesday after missing the previous match against New Zealand at the Kia Oval. Both players had been stood down for two weeks following an incident at a London nightclub on June 8, although subsequent investigations largely cleared them of wrongdoing.
McCullum acknowledged that he had confronted Stokes about rumors of a rift between them but emphasized that their relationship remains intact. Following an extensive discussion with the captain, the coach described Stokes as “outstanding” and expressed relief at having key members back in the squad. “He looks ready to go, he’s enthusiastic about the week, and obviously from our point of view, it’s nice to have the band back together,” McCullum said.
When probed about whether recent events had caused any division, McCullum denied a falling out, stating he considers Stokes “a good friend.” He noted their shared commitment to the team’s future, saying both men are “crystal clear on the direction we want this team to take.” McCullum also downplayed the incident as a minor setback rather than a defining moment in Stokes’s captaincy, highlighting the respect the leadership group holds for him despite the controversy.
“Everyone that has seen Ben over the course of his captaincy and worked intimately alongside him has an immense amount of respect for him, myself included,” McCullum said. “One blemish doesn’t ruin all of that. It’s just a slight blip, then you move on. Anyone can lead when it’s easy. The true account of a leader, or leadership group, is to be able to lead when times are difficult.”
England face a critical decider against New Zealand, with a victory for the visitors increasing pressure on McCullum’s team and potentially resulting in the first home series defeat during his four-year tenure. Regarding his own position, McCullum remained composed. “What will be, will be. When I took this job, I knew it wasn’t going to be easy. There’s a stubbornness to me as well. I’m a big boy. I can get on with things,” he said.
For the upcoming match, England announced four changes to the lineup. Stokes and Atkinson rejoin the squad, alongside wicketkeeper Jamie Smith, who returns after James Rew stepped away following the birth of his second child. Spinner Shoaib Bashir replaces Ollie Robinson, a tactical move prompted by forecasts of extreme heat that favor slow bowling.
