Los Angeles Chargers offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel acknowledged the need for urgency and improvement as the team prepares to face the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday following a disappointing season-opening loss. The Chargers fell 26-14 to the Arizona Cardinals, a result that fell short of McDaniel’s expectations after months of preparation.

McDaniel described the defeat as a humbling experience, emphasizing that no amount of planning or forecasting can replace on-field execution. Quarterback Justin Herbert struggled to find his rhythm, completing 17 of 27 passes for 207 yards, one touchdown, and a costly interception. The Chargers also lagged in time of possession, with the Cardinals controlling the ball for approximately 15 more minutes, impacting the team’s offensive rhythm.

Herbert said the team was dissatisfied with their performance and is focused on making the necessary adjustments. “It’s another opportunity for us to go play football, to be better, and to put our brand of work out there,” he stated.

The Chargers face a Raiders defense led by defensive end Maxx Crosby, which limited the Miami Dolphins to just 13 points in their Week 1 matchup. McDaniel stressed the importance of refining fundamentals such as assignment recognition, clear communication, reducing penalties, and cohesive teamwork.

Wide receiver Ladd McConkey is listed as questionable due to a rib injury, which could open the door for increased involvement from fellow wideouts Quentin Johnston and Tre’ Harris, who each received six targets in the season opener. Rookie Brenen Thompson has also impressed in practice, with head coach Jim Harbaugh noting the challenge and opportunity ahead for the young receiver.

Tight end Oronde Gadsden II is expected to play a larger role in the passing game barring unforeseen circumstances, McDaniel said, highlighting the coaching staff’s intent to diversify their offensive options.

Running back Omarion Hampton, who managed 12 carries for 43 yards and one touchdown while fumbling once against Arizona, acknowledged the need to move past the first game and focus on improvement. “We all think the same thing ... urgent to get how we want to play,” Hampton said, underscoring the team’s desire to regroup and correct course.

The Chargers will also see changes along the offensive line, as Trey Pipkins III (knee) is sidelined, leaving Kayode Awosika to step in without splitting snaps, providing an opportunity to solidify the left guard position.

McDaniel remains focused on what the team demonstrates on the field rather than preseason projections. He described the week following the loss as his “favorite” since joining the Chargers, given the chance to observe how the team responds to adversity.

“It’s not if, it’s when,” McDaniel said about facing challenges in the NFL, emphasizing his belief that resilience is key to success. The Chargers will look to bounce back against the Raiders as they seek to establish momentum early in the season.
