Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid has delivered an unprecedented start to the 2026-2027 NHL season, compiling 26 points in just nine games as his team prepares to face the reigning Stanley Cup champion Carolina Hurricanes on Thursday at Rogers Place.

McDavid, in his 12th NHL season, has already set a new franchise record by becoming the fastest player to reach 20 assists in a single season, achieving the milestone during Tuesday’s 6-3 win over the Minnesota Wild. At his current scoring rate, he is on pace to surpass Wayne Gretzky’s iconic single-season points record of 215, set in the 1985-1986 campaign. The Oilers captain has amassed eight points in his last two contests, including two five-point games, a four-point outing, and two three-point performances. He remains a constant offensive threat, having not been held scoreless in any game so far.

The Oilers have also enjoyed success behind first-year head coach Mike Babcock, posting a 7-1-1 record to start the season. This marks their best start since the 1983-1984 season, which culminated in the franchise’s first Stanley Cup championship of five titles won over six years. Edmonton has been particularly strong on the road, winning all five away games—the best away start in franchise history.

Despite his individual achievements, McDavid credited the team’s overall performance for their strong early results. “I think the team is just playing well and when that happens you are going to have success throughout the lineup,” he said. “Everybody is playing well, paying attention to details and structure and playing hard. A lot of good things are happening.”

Beyond McDavid’s leadership, the Oilers have benefited from significant contributions across the roster. Defenseman Evan Bouchard leads all NHL defensemen with 18 points and shares the league lead with Quinn Hughes for assists among defenders, totaling 11. Leon Draisaitl has been a vital offensive presence, tallying eight goals and 16 points, while winger Vasily Podkolzin has scored seven goals playing alongside McDavid and Draisaitl on the first line.

In goal, Devon Levi has emerged as the top netminder following an injury to Freddie Andersen, posting a 5-1 record in the crease. Edmonton’s only regulation loss this season came against the Utah Mammoth, current leaders of the Central Division, and the team opened with an overtime defeat to the Vancouver Canucks.

The Oilers’ upcoming schedule features a five-game homestand that will continue with visits from the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday, the Detroit Red Wings on October 26, and the Calgary Flames for a highly anticipated provincial rivalry showdown on October 28.
