McLaren has lodged an appeal against the decision to reinstate Pierre Gasly’s podium finish at the 2024 Monaco Grand Prix. Gasly, an Alpine driver, initially finished third but was dropped to seventh place after receiving two separate five-second time penalties for exceeding the pit lane speed limit. However, those penalties were later rescinded on appeal following a review that revealed an error in the calculation of the pit lane speed limit.

The reinstatement of Gasly’s podium has sparked controversy, particularly among other drivers who were penalized during the race, including McLaren’s Oscar Piastri. Piastri was among four competitors who served time penalties during the event.

In a statement, McLaren expressed concerns over the rulings, emphasizing issues related to sporting fairness and regulatory consistency. The team argued that overturning penalties retrospectively creates an uneven playing field, as some drivers were penalized for complying with the rules as they were understood and enforced at the time.

The appeal highlights ongoing tensions within Formula One regarding the application and interpretation of regulations, especially in situations where technical errors may affect enforcement decisions. The governing body’s handling of such disputes remains a focal point for teams striving to ensure equitable competition and the integrity of race outcomes.
