Scott McTominay will undergo a heart procedure following the diagnosis of a mild benign arrhythmia, ruling him out of Scotland's upcoming international fixtures. The 29-year-old midfielder left the field after 56 minutes during Napoli’s 2-1 home defeat to Como in Serie A on Sunday.

Napoli announced that McTominay is scheduled for the heart operation within the coming days and expressed hope that he will be available to play again after the international break. The former Manchester United player confirmed the news on social media, posting, “See you soon Napoli. I won’t take long.”

The procedure McTominay is set to have is a cardiac arrhythmia ablation, which involves the use of heat or cold energy to create small scars in the heart tissue. These scars interrupt abnormal electrical signals, helping to restore a normal heartbeat. While typical recovery times range from a few days to a week, these estimates are based on the general population and may differ for professional athletes.

McTominay’s absence means he will miss Scotland’s Nations League matches against Slovenia (twice), Switzerland, and North Macedonia, scheduled between September 26 and October 6. These games will mark the first four fixtures under Scotland’s new head coach Sébastien Pocognoli, who recently replaced Steve Clarke.

Serie A clubs are required to conduct regular heart screenings as part of league regulations, a measure that likely contributed to the early identification of McTominay’s condition. The medical protocols aim to detect cardiac issues promptly to ensure player safety.
