Robson Green returns to television in a new daytime drama that marks a departure from his familiar role as a law enforcement officer. Known for his portrayal of DI Geordie Keating in ITV’s "Grantchester," Green now takes on the character of Joe, a man with a criminal past seeking redemption. The series, set in a priory rehabilitation program, explores Joe’s attempts to leave his old life behind while confronting the suspicion surrounding a local murder.

Joe volunteers at the priory as part of his rehabilitation and becomes entangled in an investigation following a murder on the premises. Under the supervision of a clerical figure played by Simon Callow, Joe finds himself a prime suspect. Detective Inspector Rose O’Connell (Liz White) and Detective Sergeant Raj Singh (Gurjeet Singh) initially hope Joe will confess to the crime, which would simplify their work. However, as the investigation progresses, they come to realize that Joe is innocent and ultimately release him.

Despite his freedom, Joe remains reluctant to fully engage with law enforcement, harboring resentment toward figures like O’Connell. Their interactions reveal underlying tensions between their worlds. Joe challenges O’Connell, suggesting that while she has followed the rules all her life, societal rewards have eluded her, whereas he has endured a rougher existence, exemplified by frequent confrontations at local kebab shops. O’Connell, in turn, downplays Joe’s past, characterizing him more as a street brawler than a hardened criminal.

This complex dynamic sets the stage for an unlikely partnership between Joe and the police as the series unfolds. While Joe initially rejects the idea of returning to law enforcement, preferring instead to distance himself from authority figures, the narrative suggests he may eventually assist in crime-solving efforts. Green’s character even quips that he would rather be a nun than a cop, highlighting his ambivalence toward formal justice roles.

The drama aims to blend elements of crime and redemption, examining who can change and how trust is built between individuals from different backgrounds. Although positioned as a daytime program, it seeks to engage viewers with a fresh take on crime storytelling through the lens of a flawed but compelling protagonist trying to redefine himself.
