Five people have died from measles and dengue across Bangladesh in the 24 hours leading up to 8 a.m. yesterday, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS). The deaths include four children linked to measles and one patient with dengue, raising the country’s respective death tolls to 1,114 for measles and 250 for dengue.

During the same period, 2,405 new cases of the two diseases were documented nationwide, with 1,221 suspected measles infections reported. This has brought the total number of suspected measles cases in Bangladesh to 194,084 since the outbreak began. Among these, 21 new laboratory-confirmed measles cases were detected, increasing confirmed infections to 21,623.

Since March 15, hospitalizations related to suspected measles have reached 172,021 across the country. Of those admitted, 166,933 patients have recovered, DGHS data shows.

Dengue patients admitted in the last 24 hours numbered 1,163, with the most recent fatality recorded in the Dhaka division outside the city corporation jurisdiction. September saw the highest monthly dengue death toll this year, with 148 fatalities. Earlier months recorded fewer deaths, with five in the first five months of the year, rising to 13 in June, 36 in July, and 43 in August.

The DGHS continues to monitor both outbreaks closely as they strain healthcare resources nationwide. Efforts are underway to manage hospital capacity and contain the spread of these infectious diseases.
