The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MECC) has launched an illustrated short story competition aimed at raising environmental awareness among children, with a focus on protecting the ozone layer. Open to participants aged 10 to 14, the initiative is organised in collaboration with Qatar Reads, a program under the Qatar National Library.
Announced on Sunday, the competition aligns with Qatar’s commitment to the Vienna Convention for the Protection of the Ozone Layer and the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer. It also corresponds with the 2026 World Ozone Day theme, “Global Action for a Cooler Planet.”
The MECC said the contest seeks to encourage younger generations to engage with environmental issues by combining storytelling with creative illustration. Participants can enter individually or in teams of up to three children.
Cash prizes have been designated for the top three winners. First place will receive QR4,000, along with the opportunity to have the winning story printed and published. The second and third places will be awarded QR3,000 and QR2,000, respectively. Winners and other notable participants will be recognised during an official ceremony scheduled to coincide with World Ozone Day on September 16.
The deadline for submissions is September 1. Entries must be submitted via email directly to the MECC at CHWD@mecc.gov.qa.
