Medford High School will reopen Tuesday following a sewage backup that led to the early dismissal of students on Monday. School officials announced in a statement Monday evening that all classes, activities, programs, and events would proceed as scheduled upon reopening.

The incident began around 11 a.m. when staff detected a strong sewer odor in a hallway, prompting officials to contact the fire department for investigation. Superintendent Suzanne B. Galusi informed families via email that the school was subsequently evacuated and closed as a precaution. Students were sent home early, while other schools in the Medford district continued regular operations.

A contracted drain company was called in to identify and clear the clogged sewer line, while a separate cleaning team worked to sanitize the affected mechanical room and reduce lingering odors. The Medford Fire, Police, and Water Departments all responded to the scene to assist with the situation.

District spokesperson Will Pipicelli confirmed that afterschool activities and sports events scheduled for Monday were either canceled, rescheduled, or adjusted in response to the disruption. Authorities expressed confidence that the issue had been resolved and looked forward to welcoming students and staff back to the building the following day.
