Antony Catalano, a media executive, has secured a months-long adjournment in his ongoing criminal case involving allegations of domestic violence against his wife, Stefanie Catalano. The 59-year-old appeared via video link before the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, where his case was delayed until October 16.
Catalano faces a total of eight charges, including threats to kill, false imprisonment, reckless causing of injury, several counts of assault—including one involving a clothing iron—and choking or suffocating. The alleged incidents reportedly took place at the couple’s $30 million penthouse in St Kilda earlier this year. He has yet to enter a plea.
During the hearing, Catalano’s lawyer, Tony Hargreaves, informed Magistrate Vincenzo Caltabiano that ongoing discussions with police necessitated the adjournment. Hargreaves did not provide further details, citing concerns over what might be appropriate for public disclosure. He noted that Catalano had already met once with the police prosecutor and that talks were expected to continue.
Magistrate Caltabiano acknowledged the request, recognizing both the need for timely progression and the practical considerations involved in allowing sufficient time for case preparations. The matter had been assigned to a fast-tracked court list.
Catalano appeared in court dressed formally in a suit and tie and was permitted to attend remotely due to concerns about the potential impact of direct media exposure on his mental health. Bail was extended to remain in effect until the new court date in October.
The charges against Catalano stem from allegations that he threatened and assaulted his wife in March within their St Kilda residence. The case is ongoing, with further developments expected following continued legal discussions.
