Qatar has emphasized the importance of a peaceful, negotiated resolution to the ongoing tensions between the United States and Iran, underscoring that diplomacy remains the most viable means to ensuring stability and security in the region. In a statement during the Ministry of Foreign Affairs weekly briefing on Tuesday, Ibrahim bin Sultan Al Hashmi, Director of the Media and Communication Department, called on Tehran to abide by international laws concerning freedom of navigation and to cease attacks in the Strait of Hormuz.
Al Hashmi highlighted that ongoing communications, visits, and message exchanges between Washington and Tehran form part of active mediation efforts. “Every time we move faster towards a solution, the better it is,” he said, emphasizing that continued diplomatic engagement is critical to de-escalating the crisis.
The Strait of Hormuz, a strategic maritime corridor crucial for global energy shipments and trade, has seen recent attacks that Qatar describes as irresponsible and detrimental to regional security. Al Hashmi urged Iran to halt such actions and reopen the waterway, stressing that any disruption to maritime traffic would have serious consequences for all countries in the area, including Iran itself.
The Qatari official pointed to regional concerns over potential threats to undersea internet cables in the strait, noting that damage to such infrastructure would primarily harm the countries bordering the waterway. He stressed that maintaining security in the region necessitates restraint and a commitment to resolving disputes through peaceful means.
Addressing broader security considerations, Al Hashmi acknowledged that all regional states have the legitimate right to self-defense and the development of their defensive capabilities. However, he cautioned against actions that could further exacerbate tensions and fuel instability.
Qatar continues its efforts to facilitate dialogue and prevent further deterioration of the regional security environment. Al Hashmi dismissed pessimism regarding the prospects for settlement, affirming that only a peaceful solution can safeguard the region from continued instability.
Commenting on recent diplomatic engagements, Al Hashmi referenced French President Emmanuel Macron’s visit to Qatar as an example of the strong ties between the two countries. He noted that ongoing strategic dialogue aims to enhance cooperation in areas including energy, economy, investment, and defense, reflecting the close relationship between Qatar and France amid regional and international challenges.
