A medical team at Jaber Al-Ahmad Hospital in Kuwait successfully performed a complex hip replacement surgery using 3D printing technology, marking a significant advancement in the country’s orthopedic care. The procedure, announced by the Ministry of Health on Tuesday, involved reconstructing and replacing a damaged artificial hip joint through precise preoperative planning enabled by 3D-printed models.
The surgery was led by Dr. Hashem Al-Ali, head of the orthopedic surgery department. The patient, a 48-year-old individual, suffered from previous hip failure complicated by metal deposition and considerable loss of pelvic bone, conditions that necessitated a highly tailored surgical approach.
To prepare for the operation, the medical team utilized computed tomography (CT) scans to create a detailed 3D-printed replica of the patient’s pelvis. This allowed surgeons to thoroughly assess the extent of bone loss and defects and determine the optimal surgical strategy before beginning the procedure.
The operation included advanced reconstructive techniques, such as bone grafting and methods designed to ensure joint stability and promote long-term bone fusion. Post-surgery, the patient showed promising signs of recovery, standing, moving, and walking by the second day following the intervention.
The Ministry of Health highlighted the surgery as a reflection of Kuwait’s ongoing efforts to enhance health services by localizing advanced medical technologies and building national expertise. This case underscores the country’s capacity to manage complex orthopedic cases domestically and deliver specialized care that aligns with international medical standards.
