Megan Keith will compete in the 10,000 meters at Scotstoun Stadium in Glasgow, with her grandfather Murray Kirkwood among the spectators, celebrating his 100th birthday. Kirkwood, who recently marked his centenary with a large family gathering, has expressed particular pride in witnessing his granddaughter’s race in person.

Keith, a 24-year-old athlete from Inverness, secured a bronze medal at the European Championships in Rome two years ago. Her participation in the Commonwealth Games has become a significant milestone not only for her but also for her family. Kirkwood, who received congratulations including a telegram from the King and more than 200 birthday cards, considers Keith’s Commonwealth Games appearance a highlight of his celebrations.

In April, family members from as far afield as New Zealand traveled to Scotland to take part in his birthday festivities. Kirkwood humorously acknowledged that the prospect of watching Keith race gave him added motivation to stay healthy. “He said, ‘Now the goals have shifted, because I need to make it to the Commonwealths,’” Keith recounted, noting that her grandfather had been looking forward to the event for months.

The family’s support underscores the personal significance of Keith’s appearance at the Commonwealth Games this summer, reflecting a blend of athletic ambition and family celebration.
