Mel C, known as Sporty Spice from the Spice Girls, has revealed details of a tense confrontation with bandmate Victoria Beckham, or Posh Spice, shortly before the group rose to international fame. The incident occurred in 1996 during the Brit Awards, prior to the release of their debut single "Wannabe," when the group was still largely unknown.
According to Mel C, the conflict began after she removed her signature ponytail hairstyle at the event, which the other members felt disrupted the group’s carefully crafted individual images. The disagreement escalated into a verbal altercation between Mel C and Victoria Beckham. Despite the tension, Mel C described the evening as initially positive, with the band enjoying champagne before the disagreement unfolded.
Mel C recounted that the fallout deeply unsettled her, fearing that the incident could jeopardize her budding career. She was living with Mel B in Watford at the time, with Geri Halliwell also nearby, and both expressed disappointment over her behavior. Mel C said the episode triggered a sense of terror as she worried about losing the opportunity to fulfill her childhood dreams, which had only just become attainable.
Following the dispute, Mel C was summoned for a meeting with the group’s manager, Simon Fuller. She said Fuller reprimanded her and warned that any future incidents of similar nature would result in her dismissal from the band. The incident occurred while the group was signed to Virgin Records and attending an event alongside artists such as Lenny Kravitz.
Mel C shared these reflections on The Louis Theroux Podcast, providing an insight into the early challenges faced by the Spice Girls despite their later success and the public image of unity the group projected.
