Melbourne Storm has renewed its efforts to sign Cooper Bai, a promising young forward currently with the Gold Coast Titans. The Storm recently received permission from the Titans to open negotiations with Bai, who will become a free agent starting Sunday despite being contracted with the Titans through the end of 2027. Bai has indicated he does not plan to return to the Gold Coast.

The forward, who represented Queensland at under-19 level and is the son of former Storm player Marcus Bai, recently traveled to Papua New Guinea for discussions with the Chiefs. The Chiefs have reportedly offered Bai a three-year contract. However, Melbourne has now entered the competition for his services.

This marks the second time in the past year that Melbourne has sought to secure Bai’s signature. Earlier in the year, Bai was close to signing a three-year deal with the Storm but reversed his decision during the 10-day cooling-off period. Storm chairman Matt Tripp confirmed ongoing talks, stating the club’s strong interest in the player.

“We nearly got Cooper last time, he was really close to signing with us and then he had a change of heart,” Tripp said. “Obviously his situation has changed, so hopefully he sees his future with us.”

As Bai weighs his options, the outcome of this recruitment battle remains uncertain, with multiple clubs pursuing the forward amid his free agency status.
