Traditional and contemporary melodies brought together over 100 trainee teachers from across Malaysia at the Madani Trainee Teachers Orchestra Concert 2026, held recently at Dewan Sri Pinang in George Town, Penang. The event attracted an audience of several hundred and featured performers from 27 teacher training campuses nationwide.
The concert showcased a wide-ranging repertoire reflecting Malaysia’s diverse musical heritage. Performers presented traditional genres such as boria and zapin alongside children’s folk songs from various states. These were interspersed with English and international selections, including jazz, pop, and instrumental classics, creating an eclectic and inclusive musical experience.
In the lead-up to the event, participants engaged in multiple practice sessions, fostering camaraderie and teamwork. Organisers emphasised how music serves as a unifying force that bridges cultural and generational divides.
Datuk Dr Mohd Azam Ahmad, director-general of the Education Ministry, noted that involvement in such artistic activities could benefit future educators by enhancing their communication skills and deepening their appreciation for diversity. He highlighted that beyond delivering academic content, teachers are responsible for nurturing students’ character and humanity. Dr Mohd Azam also pointed to the leadership, collaboration, and management abilities developed through the concert as valuable assets that trainees could apply when leading inclusive and meaningful classroom activities.
Dr Nafizah Shaik Ismail, senior deputy rector of Institut Pendidikan Guru (IPG), reinforced the pedagogical value of the arts. She explained that music, song, and dance improve awareness of rhythm, body language, emotional expression, and cultural diversity—qualities important for educators guiding co-curricular programs.
This annual event, which began in 2022 at the IPG Malay Women’s Campus in Melaka, is held under the auspices of the Orkestra Siswa Guru (OSiG). The IPG Tuanku Bainun Campus in Bukit Mertajam, Penang, served as this year’s main organiser.
Mohd Fadzil Mohd Salleh, director of IPG Tuanku Bainun Campus, described the arts as more than entertainment, emphasising their role in shaping character, creativity, and identity. He expressed hope that the concert experience would inspire future teachers to excel professionally while cultivating creative and cultured qualities, thereby instilling noble values within the wider community.
