A state memorial service for Professor Richard Scolyer will be held at the Sydney Opera House on Monday, July 13, at 11 a.m., following his death earlier this month at the age of 59. The announcement was made by his wife, Katie Nicholl, via social media. Tickets for the public ceremony are available through the Opera House’s website.

Professor Scolyer, who was named co-Australian of the Year in 2024 alongside colleague Georgina Long, passed away after a battle with glioblastoma, a form of brain cancer, which he was diagnosed with in May 2023. During his illness, he underwent a pioneering treatment for melanoma, which he helped develop.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese confirmed that Professor Scolyer would be accorded a state funeral, describing him as one of Australia’s “brightest lights.” In a posthumous open letter, Professor Scolyer expressed a wish to be remembered as a “proud everyday Aussie who ‘gave it a crack.’” He thanked supporters across Australia and beyond for their encouragement throughout his journey.

Ms. Nicholl reflected on her late husband’s approach to life and family, describing him as someone with “a real zest for life” and a deep commitment to his children’s everyday moments. She said his legacy was to inspire others to embrace challenges and pursue their goals with determination, regardless of the obstacles.

Professor Scolyer’s contributions to cancer research, particularly in melanoma treatment, mark a significant chapter in Australian medical science. His community engagement and openness about his illness garnered widespread admiration, underscoring a career marked by both professional achievement and personal resilience.
