Memphis launched its 2026 football season with a 27-21 victory at UNLV on August 29, marking the debut of head coach Charles Huff. The triumph was notable as the Tigers rallied to score the final 13 points while holding UNLV scoreless for the last 25 minutes of the contest. It also represented the program’s first-ever road opener under a new head coach.

Huff, a former top assistant at Alabama under Nick Saban, emphasized the importance of preparation and culture in achieving the win. He noted extensive planning went into the team’s training camp and mental readiness, including studying opponents well ahead of the season and managing challenging travel logistics. Huff explained that Memphis aimed to mitigate the difficulties of cross-country trips by consulting NFL teams and hiring Dr. Cheri Mai, a recovery and wellness specialist, to support player health during travel. The trip from Memphis to Las Vegas alone reportedly cost more than $20,000.

In his reflections on the game, Huff remarked on a humorous moment during a second-half celebration when he collided with defensive lineman Jacari Gatling, who was instrumental in the Tigers’ defensive effort, contributing to six sacks on the day. Huff acknowledged that an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty he incurred may have cost Memphis 15 yards but underscored his commitment to defending his players. After the game, Huff received a game ball from Athletic Director Ed Scott and ceremoniously passed one to sports administrator Katie Sulentic.

Memphis enters the new season with high aspirations under Huff’s leadership. The team’s successful road win against UNLV sets a positive tone as they prepare to host Arkansas State this week, followed by a significant Group of Six matchup on September 12 at Boise State. The university has invested heavily in its football program in recent years, fueling ambitions of eventual inclusion in a Power Five conference.

Huff’s approach centers on focusing solely on the immediate challenges, avoiding distractions related to longer-term goals. With a roster featuring 71 newcomers, many part of his ongoing rebuilding efforts since taking over the program, the coach stressed the importance of managing immediate processes to build sustained success. Despite disruptions earlier in the week caused by storms and power outages in Memphis—leading to emergency housing arrangements for players—Huff’s team showed resilience and discipline in securing the road victory.
