Carlos Mendoza has been appointed as the Philadelphia Phillies’ third base and infield coach, the team announced Thursday. Mendoza, who most recently managed the New York Mets, replaces Bobby Dickerson, who was dismissed earlier this week alongside former Mets hitting coach Kevin Long.
Mendoza, 46, was relieved of his duties as Mets manager in June after a 34-46 start to the 2026 season that included a 12-game losing streak in April. Despite being well-regarded within the clubhouse, Mendoza was unable to turn around the team’s fortunes, and the Mets finished last in the National League East with a 74-88 record. Following his departure, Andy Green, the Mets’ farm director, assumed managerial responsibilities and was later signed to a three-year extension in September.
Prior to his tenure as Mets manager, Mendoza spent several years on the New York Yankees coaching staff, including serving as bench coach under Aaron Boone. Mendoza has been widely respected for his expertise in managing professional infields and led the Mets to an overall 206-199 record. During his time at the helm, he guided the team to a postseason appearance, reaching the 2024 National League Championship Series, where they were eliminated by the Los Angeles Dodgers in six games.
His addition to the Phillies coaching staff follows the team’s recent extension of manager Don Mattingly, who moved from interim status to a two-year contract. This transition allowed Mattingly to make changes within his on-field coaching personnel, including bringing in Mendoza.
Mendoza succeeds Bobby Dickerson, who was dismissed amid a broader coaching staff shakeup that also included Kevin Long. Long has a notable history of working with Mendoza’s former teams; he was a Yankees hitting coach during the 2009 World Series championship season and later served as the Mets hitting coach. After a stint with the Washington Nationals, Long joined the Phillies’ staff under manager Joe Girardi in 2021.
This latest move by the Phillies represents a continued effort to adjust their coaching lineup in pursuit of improved team performance, leveraging Mendoza’s experience both as a manager and infield specialist.
