As university freshers prepare to move into halls of residence for the upcoming academic year, concerns about contagious illnesses are rising, with meningitis remaining a significant health risk. Meningitis, an inflammation of the protective membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord, can be caused by viral or bacterial infections, and its rapid progression makes awareness crucial, especially in communal living environments such as student accommodation.
Dr Tom Nutt, chief executive officer of the charity Meningitis Now, emphasises that while bacterial meningitis is relatively rare, it can be life-threatening without prompt treatment. The bacteria that cause the illness are often carried harmlessly at the back of the nose and throat by many individuals, but when they cross into the bloodstream and reach the meninges, they trigger dangerous inflammation. Around 10% of bacterial meningitis cases result in death, with the disease capable of causing fatal outcomes in under 24 hours.
Diagnosis typically involves a lumbar puncture to test cerebrospinal fluid for bacterial presence, though clinicians generally initiate treatment based on symptoms rather than waiting for confirmation. Treatment differs by cause: viral meningitis usually resolves within a week or so with supportive care such as rest and over-the-counter medications, while bacterial meningitis requires urgent hospital administration of antibiotics. Early antibiotic treatment significantly improves survival rates and reduces long-term complications.
Recognising the symptoms early is vital but can be challenging since initial signs often resemble common colds or flu. According to Dr Nutt, initial symptoms may include headache, fever, cold extremities, confusion, disorientation, and vomiting. As the disease advances, patients may develop sensitivity to light, a stiff neck, or a distinctive rash that does not fade when pressed. Symptoms do not always present in a consistent sequence, so rapid deterioration in a patient’s condition should prompt immediate medical attention by calling emergency services.
Certain populations are at heightened risk. Infants and toddlers are most vulnerable due to underdeveloped immune systems and are routinely vaccinated early in life. Teenagers and young adults, particularly those entering university, represent the next most at-risk group. Studies indicate that while approximately 10% of the general population carry meningitis-causing bacteria asymptomatically, this prevalence can rise to 25% or more among university students during the initial weeks of term. The close contact typical in student communities—sharing food, drinks, cigarettes, and living spaces—facilitates the transmission of bacteria.
Public health officials and charities continue to stress the importance of awareness and timely medical intervention to reduce the severity and spread of meningitis among young people, especially as the freshers’ period approaches.
