Max Dowman, the 16-year-old Arsenal forward, has drawn comparisons to Barcelona’s rising star Lamine Yamal, according to Arsenal midfielder Mikel Merino. Dowman scored twice in Arsenal’s 4-2 victory over Ipswich Town in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday, marking his first senior appearance of the season and further highlighting his potential.
Merino, who plays alongside Yamal for the Spanish national team, praised Dowman’s fearlessness and ability to perform under pressure. “There are some similarities in terms of their character,” Merino said. “They don’t care about the spotlight. They thrive when pressure is at its highest. They are always up for the challenge and they are not shy at all – even facing the biggest names in the game.”
Yamal, 19, broke into Barcelona’s senior squad at 16 in 2023 and recorded seven goals and nine assists across 50 appearances in all competitions last season. While Dowman’s current statistics are not expected to match Yamal’s immediate impact, Merino emphasized Dowman’s significant talent and the need for continued development. “He is a big talent and we have to take care of him,” he said. “He needs to keep learning. There is still big room for improvement in a lot of areas, and he knows that. So we are going to be by his side trying to get him to his best level.”
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has been taking a cautious approach to integrating Dowman into senior football, aware of the challenges faced by young players adjusting to high-level competition. Merino highlighted the importance of balancing encouragement with humility. “It is a thin line,” he noted. “You want him to shine and show everyone the talent he has. But sometimes you have to remind them that they are human beings and part of a bigger squad and team.”
Both Dowman and Yamal have been described as humble and eager to learn from experienced teammates, qualities Merino considers invaluable. “They are always keen to learn and listen to the veterans. That is priceless,” he added.
In addition to his praise for Dowman, Merino also commended 17-year-old centre-back Marll Salmon, who impressed against Ipswich. He highlighted the maturity required in defensive positions, noting that making few mistakes and handling crucial actions responsibly is essential at that level.
