Merthyr Town came from behind to secure a 1-1 draw against Chorley in a National League North encounter on Saturday. The match, played at Merthyr’s home ground, saw the visitors take an early lead before the hosts fought back to salvage a point late in the game.

Chorley took the lead in the 23rd minute when Warren Clarke converted a header from an Adam Henley cross, sending the ball off the bar and into the net. The goal rewarded a period of pressure from the Magpies, who had earlier forced Merthyr’s goalkeeper into a sharp save following a throw-in that fell to Harvey Smith.

Merthyr started the match on the front foot, pressuring Chorley’s defense with chances from Morgan Wigley and striker Kane Simpson. Wigley had an early curling shot that went wide, while Simpson challenged the Chorley goalkeeper with a strong attempt and later created an opportunity for Jacob Maddox, who narrowly missed the target.

The Martyrs continued to push after falling behind, with Li-Bau Stowell making a crucial save to help keep the scoreline close. On the other end, Chorley’s Elliot Taylor was denied by Merthyr’s keeper Jaimie Cogman, maintaining the tight contest.

Merthyr’s substitute Elis Watts gradually influenced the game after coming off the bench. He forced a save and was involved in a tense moment when visiting defender Harvey Smith inadvertently headed the ball onto his own crossbar. Near the end of the match, Iwan John hit the post in another near miss for Merthyr.

Watts ultimately secured the equalizer seven minutes from time with a well-placed curling shot that found the net, cancelling out Clarke’s earlier opener. The goal ensured the Martyrs shared the points, extending their run without defeat and denying Chorley a full three points.

The draw leaves Merthyr Town seeking their second victory of the campaign, while Chorley remain competitive despite dropping two points from their early lead.
