Lionel Messi extended his record-breaking World Cup scoring streak as Argentina secured a 3-1 victory over Jordan on Sunday in Arlington, Texas. The win marked Argentina’s third consecutive triumph in the Group J stage of the tournament, which they had already secured before the match.
Messi, who turned 39 three days earlier, entered the game in the 60th minute after Argentina made nine changes to their starting lineup from the previous fixture. He scored in the 80th minute, becoming the first player to find the net in seven consecutive World Cup matches. This goal, his 19th in World Cup history, set a new all-time scoring record for the tournament.
The goal came from a free kick just outside the penalty area, awarded after Messi was fouled. His low shot, directed between two Jordan defenders, found the left corner of the net, sealing his place further in the history books. The match was held at the same stadium where Messi last Monday had surpassed the previous World Cup scoring record.
In addition to Messi’s goal, Giovani Lo Celso contributed Argentina’s second goal, becoming the first player apart from Messi to score for the defending champions at this World Cup. Argentina’s performance throughout the group stage has been dominant, finishing with three victories and demonstrating consistent form with seven wins and two draws in their last nine World Cup games.
Looking ahead, Argentina will face Cape Verde in the round of 32 on Friday. Cape Verde, known as the smallest country to qualify for the knockout rounds, will present a new challenge for the titleholders as they seek to advance further in the tournament.
