Meta Platforms Inc. announced the launch of a new business unit focused on providing artificial intelligence (AI) tools to enterprise customers, signaling a strategic effort by Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg to expand revenue streams beyond the company’s traditional advertising model.
The newly established Meta Enterprise Platform will integrate various AI products, including the Muse personal assistant and advanced coding tools, alongside access to Meta’s cutting-edge AI models. Chirantan “CJ” Desai, the current CEO of database company MongoDB, has been appointed to lead the division and will report directly to Zuckerberg.
In a statement, Zuckerberg described the initiative as a “major pillar” designed to help businesses leverage AI for growth and transformation. The move is part of Zuckerberg’s broader plan to capitalize on Meta’s substantial investments in AI technology. This year, the company anticipates spending up to $145 billion on capital expenditures, largely directed toward data center infrastructure and the development of advanced AI models.
Investor response to Meta’s AI ventures has been mixed. Shares of Meta rose sharply in recent weeks, fueled by strong user adoption of Muse, which was publicly introduced in May and launched in early September. Since its release, Muse has become the most downloaded app on both the Apple and Android app stores in the United States. The app offers users assistance through a group of autonomous bots that perform tasks such as grocery ordering, travel bookings, and financial management.
However, Meta’s stock fell 4.3 percent following the announcement of the enterprise-focused AI division. Meanwhile, MongoDB shares declined by nearly 20 percent after the departure of Desai was made public.
Zuckerberg has maintained that the company’s extensive investment in AI will not only enhance its core advertising business but also create new avenues for profitability. Last week, he revealed a new handheld AI device branded as a “charm,” which will incorporate Muse and offer capabilities such as live, interactive conversations with the AI assistant.
During the announcement, Zuckerberg emphasized that Meta aims to leverage its significant data center resources and AI advancements to serve enterprise customers, marking a notable shift in the company’s strategic focus toward enterprise AI solutions.
