A pregnant woman and her unborn twins survived after a metal pole fell off a truck and struck her vehicle on a Southern California freeway, authorities reported. The incident occurred on July 1 at approximately 2:15 p.m. on the northbound lanes of the Interstate 5 Freeway near Temecula.
According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the expectant mother was driving a Ram ProMaster when the metal pole, identified as a car hauler tiedown bar, came loose from a nearby truck. The pole pierced the windshield of her van and struck her in the abdomen. Despite the severity of the situation, the woman sustained only minor injuries, and her twins were reported to be unharmed.
The CHP described the outcome as "a miracle," emphasizing the unusual nature of the incident. Photographs released by the agency depicted a large hole in the front windshield of the van, surrounded by extensive cracks, illustrating the force of the impact.
Unsecured loads are a significant safety concern on roadways, with authorities noting that thousands of crashes every year are caused by items falling from vehicles, sometimes resulting in serious injuries or fatalities. Road debris alone is linked to more than 200,000 collisions annually in the United States.
The CHP issued a warning highlighting the dangers posed by improperly secured cargo. “A simple metal bar became a high-speed projectile — a stark reminder that what isn’t properly secured can turn deadly in an instant,” the agency stated. This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of ensuring that all loads on trucks and trailers are securely fastened to prevent potentially life-threatening accidents.
