Luke Metcalf is set to make his first NRL appearance for the New Zealand Warriors in four months, returning to the field Friday night in a crucial match against the Penrith Panthers at Mt Smart Stadium. The halfback replaces Te Maire Martin, who is sidelined with a hamstring injury.

Metcalf, 27, last played in round 5 in April and has spent much of the season recovering from a torn ACL sustained in 2025. Despite this, the Warriors have refused multiple attempts by the Dragons to secure Metcalf’s immediate transfer.

During Metcalf’s absence, teammate Tanah Boyd emerged as a key playmaker before suffering an ACL injury, after which coach Andrew Webster chose to rely on other halves, including Chanel Harris-Tavita and Martin, to guide the team. Webster has maintained confidence in this spine combination for the Warriors’ push to the finals, but with Boyd now unavailable and Martin injured, Metcalf’s return has become necessary.

Warriors coach Andrew Webster emphasized Metcalf’s value to the squad despite limited game time this season. “If we need Luke at any stage, he’s a world-class player,” Webster said, noting Metcalf’s strong training performances and inclusion in the extended squad each week. Coaching staff have advised Metcalf to manage his game carefully, focusing on his running and kicking strengths while building chemistry with teammates, especially Harris-Tavita.

Meanwhile, the Penrith Panthers have made a change in their halves for the match. Blaize Talagi was recalled to partner with Nathan Cleary after being dropped to the NSW Cup last week. Originally, Jack Cogger was named to start at five-eighth, but he withdrew due to the impending birth of his first child.
