Reading, Pa. — Amid a challenging season for the New York Mets, promising developments have come from within the organization’s minor league system, particularly the progression of middle infielder Mitch Voit. The 21-year-old prospect, a 2025 first-round draft pick, was promoted to Double-A Binghamton on Monday following a strong performance at High-A Brooklyn.

Voit, the Mets’ No. 5 prospect, has shown notable growth both offensively and defensively. After a 2024 elbow surgery shifted his focus exclusively to infield and hitting duties, Voit emerged as a versatile player capable of handling multiple positions across the infield. Although he primarily played second base at the University of Michigan, the Mets have been utilizing him mostly at shortstop this season to evaluate his adaptability to the premium middle-infield role. Voit has expressed confidence in his ability to handle shortstop duties, despite initially needing to refine his footwork around the bag.

A key aspect of Voit’s development has been his speed and base running. He currently leads the Mets organization in stolen bases, swiping his 37th during a recent game for Binghamton. Offensively, Voit faced early difficulties adjusting to professional pitching, recording a .219 batting average and .697 OPS through May with Brooklyn. However, he made adjustments to his batting approach, including opening up his stance, which helped him significantly improve during June and continue that momentum into July. In June alone, he posted a .305 average with three home runs and a .901 OPS.

To further enhance his performance, Voit has increased focus on physical conditioning. Emphasizing nutrition, hydration, and rest, he has worked to boost his bat speed and maintain his strength at 6 feet tall and 201 pounds, efforts the organization supports closely. His professional approach and positive attitude have stood out, as demonstrated in his Double-A debut where he went 3-for-5, including a triple and two doubles.

While the Mets continue to rely on veteran second baseman Marcus Semien, who is under contract through the 2027 season with nearly $46 million remaining, Voit’s rise offers hope for the future at a position that has struggled this year. Other prospects, such as shortstop Elian Peña, the organization’s No. 3 prospect currently in Low-A St. Lucie, are also in development, though Peña is just 18 years old. With possible roster changes anticipated, the Mets may pursue additional young talent to bolster their middle infield.

For now, Mitch Voit’s emergence provides a bright spot for a franchise navigating a difficult season, demonstrating steady progress through the minors while preparing for a potential role with the major league club in the years ahead.
