The New York Mets have traded pitcher David Peterson to the Chicago Cubs in exchange for third-base prospect Cole Mathis, following a challenging doubleheader loss to Chicago at Citi Field on Wednesday. The Cubs completed a sweep of the two games with a combined score of 20-8, underscoring the Mets’ ongoing struggles this season.

Peterson, who previously held the distinction of being the longest-tenured player on the Mets’ roster, has seen his role diminish this year amid performance concerns. The 6-foot-6 right-hander posted a 3-6 record with a 6.09 ERA over 16 appearances, including eight starts. His recent outings have been particularly difficult, surrendering 13 runs over just 10 ²/₃ innings in his last three appearances, which ultimately led to him losing his spot in the starting rotation.

The Cubs acquired Peterson as they look to reinforce their pitching staff, while the Mets secured a highly regarded prospect in return. Mathis, 22, was selected by Chicago in the second round of the 2024 MLB Draft and is currently playing third base. This season, Mathis has combined time between Low-A and High-A levels, compiling a .272 batting average with 10 home runs, 39 RBIs, and a .981 OPS.

This trade may signal the start of a broader roster shakeup for the Mets, who are reportedly exploring additional moves before the trade deadline to address underperforming players. Outfielder Freddy Peralta, who has also struggled to meet expectations this season, is said to be among the candidates potentially available for trade.
