Mexico and Qatar marked more than five decades of diplomatic relations this year, reflecting a longstanding partnership rooted in shared values and expanding cooperation across multiple sectors, according to Mexican Ambassador Jose Guillermo Ordorica Robles.

Diplomatic ties between the two countries were first established in 1975, making Mexico one of the earliest nations to formalize relations with Qatar. The ambassador highlighted that the 51st anniversary of this relationship represents a milestone underscoring mutual respect and ongoing collaboration.

Speaking on the progress made since the inception of formal ties, Ordorica Robles emphasized the alignment of both countries on principles such as peace, dialogue, and multilateral diplomacy. Despite geographical distance, he noted that Mexico and Qatar maintain close connections through shared ideologies and common goals, which continue to strengthen their bilateral relationship.

Economic engagement between Mexico and Qatar has increased steadily, with trade predominantly focused on metals and technological products, according to the ambassador. He identified agriculture as a key area for potential growth and collaboration, pointing to Mexico’s expertise in innovative agricultural technologies. Highlighting Mexico’s participation in last year’s AgriteQ exhibition, he expressed readiness to share technological advancements and knowledge to support food security initiatives in Qatar.

“We are using several innovative technologies and ideas in agriculture, and we can share these with Qatar,” Ordorica Robles said. “Mexico has a lot of potential for cooperation in the agricultural sector... This is a great opportunity, and we are committed to it.”

Beyond economic and technological cooperation, cultural ties have become a significant component of the bilateral relationship. This year, Mexico is participating in the Qatar Canada and Mexico 2026 Year of Culture, an initiative designed to showcase and celebrate the rich traditions and contemporary arts of the three countries. The ambassador described an ongoing exhibition titled “Sand and Corn, One Sun,” which uses artistic expressions to reflect on the connections between Mexican and Qatari peoples and their shared vision of art as a means to foster international understanding.

Ordorica Robles emphasized the role of art and culture in promoting dialogue and empathy at a time of global challenges and divisions. “Art allows us to express different stories, emotions and visions. This is one way of fostering common artistic features and identity of both the countries,” he said.

As the two nations look ahead, the Mexican ambassador expressed optimism that their longstanding friendship and cooperation would continue to deepen across political, economic, and cultural spheres.
