Miami maintained its position as the top-ranked team in college football with a commanding 52-23 victory over Pittsburgh on Saturday. The Hurricanes delivered a dominant performance in their first game as the nation’s No. 1 team since 2002, extending their unbeaten record to 7-0 overall and 5-0 in Atlantic Coast Conference play.
Quarterback Dariah Mensah led the offense, completing 31 of 37 passes for 387 yards and four touchdowns. Miami’s offensive efficiency was evident as the Hurricanes converted 10 of their first 12 third-down attempts and scored on seven of their first eight possessions, including six touchdowns and a field goal.
Wide receiver Malachi Toney set a new school record with 16 catches for 194 yards and three touchdowns. Toney surpassed the previous Miami single-game reception record of 13, which was established by Mike Harley in 2021 and matched by Toney himself last season. Starting the game just 31 yards short of 2,000 receiving yards for his career, Toney quickly reached the milestone, joining Ohio State’s Jeremiah Smith as one of only two active FBS players to reach 2,000 receiving yards by the end of their sophomore season.
On the ground, Javian Mallory contributed two rushing touchdowns, while Mark Fletcher Jr. secured his place in Miami history by recording the 33rd rushing touchdown of his career, moving him into second place on the school’s all-time rushing touchdown list.
The Hurricanes’ victory over Pittsburgh is expected to solidify their hold on the No. 1 ranking in the upcoming Associated Press Top 25 poll update, ending a recent trend where the team ranked first dropped following losses. Texas and Georgia previously held the top spot before both suffering defeats in consecutive weeks.
Miami’s balanced and efficient offensive display underscores the team’s status as a leading contender this season as they continue their pursuit of a national championship.
