Hawaii secured a decisive 56-21 victory over Northern Illinois on Saturday in DeKalb, Illinois, extending their Mountain West Conference schedule with a commanding performance on the road. The Rainbow Warriors improved to 2-6 overall and 1-4 in conference play, while the Huskies fell to 0-7 and 0-3, remaining winless in their first season as Mountain West members.

The game marked a historic travel distance for an FBS team’s conference matchup within the United States, with Hawaii journeying approximately 4,255 miles from Honolulu to DeKalb. This broke the program’s previous record for conference road trips, surpassing the 4,039 miles traveled to face Louisiana Tech during Western Athletic Conference contests.

Hawaii quarterback Micah Alejado completed 22 of 32 passes for 323 yards and three touchdowns. His scoring throws included two short passes to Frank Abreu covering 13 and 12 yards, and a longer 44-yard connection to Josiah Fetui. Alejado’s accuracy was especially strong in the first half, when he went 17 of 22 for 237 yards, helping Hawaii build a 35-14 lead at halftime. The Rainbow Warriors spread the ball widely, with twelve receivers contributing to a total of 23 receptions.

Running back DeVon Rice added to Hawaii’s dominant showing on the ground with three rushing touchdowns, covering 2, 33, and 5 yards on his way to 71 yards on 12 carries. Rice’s efforts helped Hawaii maintain consistent scoring pressure throughout the game.

Northern Illinois quarterback Taron Dickens passed for 171 yards and two touchdowns, both caught by DeAree Rogers, who led the Huskies with eight receptions for 115 yards. Despite their offensive production, Northern Illinois struggled to keep pace with Hawaii’s multifaceted attack and was unable to convert on enough opportunities in the loss.

The result extends Hawaii’s search for stability amid a challenging season, while Northern Illinois continues to adapt to Mountain West competition without a win thus far.
