A Chinese robotics company is advancing its international expansion with a focus on deploying artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled heavy-duty robots at Saudi Aramco facilities, while preparing for a potential initial public offering in Hong Kong next year. Micbot, headquartered in Zhejiang province, is developing explosion-proof industrial quadrupeds designed to operate in harsh and hazardous environments such as oilfields, petrochemical plants, and mines.

Micbot’s chief marketing officer, Huang Ziyan, explained that the company’s robots are intended to replace humans in extreme and risky industrial conditions. Unlike consumer-oriented robots tailored for education or companionship, Micbot’s products feature a robust design that integrates a low-centre-of-gravity chassis with wheeled legs, enabling them to carry substantial payloads and navigate challenging terrain.

The robots are engineered to endure a range of environmental stressors common in oil and gas production settings, including strong magnetic fields, high temperatures, dust, and wet or submerged conditions. The company emphasizes its “four-in-one” protection system—antimagnetic, explosion-proof, waterproof, and heat-resistant capabilities—as a key competitive advantage suited to Saudi Arabia’s demanding operational environments.

Since February, Aramco executives and technical staff have visited Micbot’s research and development center multiple times, providing input to optimize the robots for their specific needs. The units are currently undergoing rigorous testing in China, with initial shipments to Saudi Arabia expected as early as September or October. Following this deployment, Aramco plans to evaluate the robots’ performance before making a decision on large-scale procurement by the end of the year.

Equipped with gas sensors and infrared thermal imagers, Micbot’s robots are capable of conducting continuous autonomous inspections to detect gas leaks or early signs of fire, issuing real-time alerts. Co-founder Gu Jufeng highlighted that these machines are purpose-built to enhance safety by operating in high-risk areas such as petrochemical facilities, mining sites, and electrolytic aluminium plants, thereby reducing the need for human presence in hazardous zones.

The company sees considerable potential for its products within Aramco’s mining operations, where conditions involve extreme heat, sandstorms, difficult terrain, and harsh desert climates. Micbot’s designs emphasize all-terrain mobility, high payload capacities for carrying exploration instruments, and resilience to a wide temperature range.

The robots utilize advanced AI technologies, including vision-language-action architecture and reinforcement learning, allowing them to navigate autonomously without constant remote human control.

A Beijing-based representative connected to Aramco confirmed ongoing collaboration with Chinese tech startups but declined to provide additional details. Aramco maintains a research and development center in Beijing and has steadily increased engagement with Chinese technology firms as part of its broader strategy in one of its largest overseas markets.

Domestically, Micbot recently formed a partnership with Sunho Group, a state-owned company focused on coal mining and aluminium processing in Henan province, aiming to automate safety inspections in underground environments.

The move reflects the broader momentum within China’s robotics sector, which has seen heightened investment and increased efforts to penetrate international markets amid efforts to showcase the country’s advances in technology and manufacturing.
