The Tony Award-winning production MJ The Michael Jackson Musical is set to make its Singapore debut with a limited run in August 2027 at the Sands Theatre. This marks the musical’s first appearance in the city-state as part of its inaugural Asian tour, which is scheduled to begin in October and includes stops in other major cities such as Tokyo.
The show offers audiences a behind-the-scenes look at the creation of Michael Jackson’s Dangerous World Tour, which took place from 1992 to 1993 and featured two sold-out performances in Singapore at the former National Stadium. Set in 1992, the production features more than 25 of Jackson’s hits, including "Beat It," "Thriller," "Smooth Criminal," and "Man In The Mirror," providing a glimpse into a pivotal period in the late American singer’s career.
MJ The Michael Jackson Musical first premiered on Broadway in 2021 and has garnered critical acclaim, winning four Tony Awards including Best Choreography, Best Lighting Design of a Musical, Best Sound Design of a Musical, and Best Actor in a Musical for Myles Frost, who portrayed Jackson in both the Broadway and West End productions. The show has also been staged in countries such as Australia and Germany and has attracted over eight million viewers worldwide.
The narrative unfolds through the perspective of an MTV journalist granted rare rehearsal access, combining Jackson’s iconic songs with dynamic choreography and theatrical design to evoke the creative process behind the tour. The production aims to celebrate Jackson’s enduring influence on music and dance, highlighting the artistry and innovation that cemented his legendary status.
Christopher Wheeldon, the show’s director and choreographer, emphasized the intention to honour both the familiar music and the creative spirit behind it. “Michael Jackson transformed the relationship between music and movement in a way few artists ever have,” he said in a press statement. “The production brings to life a pivotal moment in Michael’s career and celebrates the enduring impact of his work on generations of artists and audiences.”
Chantal Prudhomme, presenter and CEO of Base Entertainment Asia, remarked on the significance of bringing the musical to Singapore, noting its nostalgic value for those who witnessed Jackson live and its role in connecting new audiences to his legacy. “For those who never had that opportunity, this is perhaps the closest they will come to experiencing the energy and magic of Michael Jackson live, while also being taken through the story of the man himself,” she said.
Tickets will go on sale starting in late September, with early access available through various channels including UOB, the show’s official bank partner. UOB cardholders will be eligible for discounts and priority booking, with multiple sales phases running through the end of October. Further details on ticket pricing are expected to be announced closer to the sale date.
