British singer-songwriter Michael Kiwanuka has released his fourth album, *Fudge*, following a significant health crisis. The album’s launch came shortly after the November 2024 release of *Small Changes*, an album noted for its polished and confident sound. Kiwanuka, whose previous work includes three gold-certified albums, a Mercury Prize win, and a Grammy nomination, gained widespread recognition with his 2017 single “Cold Little Heart,” which saw renewed popularity after featuring in the television series *Big Little Lies*.

While *Small Changes* was recorded in Los Angeles with notable contributors such as bassist Pino Palladino and drummer James Gadson—both veterans who have worked with Marvin Gaye and Donald Fagen, respectively—and R&B producer Jimmy Jam on organ, *Fudge* offers a contrasting approach. The latter was created simultaneously but in a different setting: a studio in Southampton described by Kiwanuka as resembling a "medieval hut." This setting contributed to a rawer, more spontaneous atmosphere compared to the refined sound of *Small Changes*.

Initially announced in 2025, *Fudge* was set to follow quickly on the heels of its predecessor. However, its release was delayed and the album disappeared from schedules without explanation. Only recently did Kiwanuka reveal that he had suffered a stroke, which led to an extended hospital stay and ongoing residential care in Hampshire. Citing uncertainty about when he might be able to produce new music, Kiwanuka released *Fudge* as a way to share his recent work with fans.

*Fudge* is marked by a lo-fi aesthetic, featuring audible tape hiss and some tracks that begin abruptly, reflecting a live-in-the-studio feel. Despite this rougher edge, the album combines gritty performances with lush string arrangements, maintaining a balance between spontaneity and meticulousness. Many pieces on the album originated from jam sessions, extending motifs from earlier songs like “Just Another Moment” and “Stars,” but they avoid sounding self-indulgent or meandering.

Musically, *Fudge* holds its own, with memorable melodies ranging from reflective compositions such as “California” to more tender tracks like “You Sent Me Flying.” Critics have noted that the album could stand as a full-fledged release without the backstory of its creation, resonating as a coherent and deliberate artistic statement.

The album’s themes, at times contemplating Kiwanuka’s future in music, take on added poignancy in light of his recent health struggles. Nonetheless, *Fudge* conveys a sense of creative clarity rather than uncertainty. As Kiwanuka continues his recovery, the album leaves listeners with a hopeful anticipation of his eventual return to the music scene.

*Fudge* was officially released in late April 2025.
