Michael Owen has suggested that Mohamed Salah could still reconsider his decision to leave Liverpool, despite the forward’s recent announcement that he would end his time at Anfield. Salah disclosed in March that he had agreed to depart the club on a free transfer, citing dissatisfaction with Liverpool’s current style of play and expressing a desire for a return to the intense, pressing approach associated with Jurgen Klopp’s tenure.

The situation at Liverpool has shifted since Salah’s announcement, with the club replacing former manager Arne Slot—who was dismissed last month—with Andoni Iraola. Owen, a former Liverpool striker, indicated that these changes might prompt Salah to rethink his departure, though he acknowledged the challenges of reversing such a decision once it has been publicly communicated.

“Is it impossible that there’s a U-turn? I think it’s not beyond the realm that if Slot had been sacked during the season, Salah might have seen out his contract,” Owen commented. He added, “Obviously now that he’s done his wave goodbye and all the rest of it, it’s probably gone too far now to make a big U-turn.” However, he conceded that the possibility remains, noting that if the managerial change had occurred earlier, Salah might have reconsidered his stance.

In the meantime, Liverpool are reportedly exploring options to fill the void left by Salah’s anticipated departure. The club has been linked with RB Leipzig winger Yan Diomande, who could represent a significant investment. Owen, however, advocated for a different approach, suggesting West Ham United’s Jarrod Bowen as a more suitable replacement on the right flank.

“I would say that Liverpool need a right-sided attacking player,” Owen said. “I’ve mentioned before, I think Jarrod Bowen is a really good solution.”

As Liverpool prepare for the upcoming season under Iraola’s leadership, the club faces crucial decisions regarding its squad composition and tactical direction, with the potential loss of Salah representing a key challenge. Whether the Egyptian forward remains at Anfield or moves on, Liverpool’s strategy in the transfer market and on the pitch will be closely watched.
