Warde Manuel, the athletic director at the University of Michigan, will receive a $7.14 million lump sum as part of a separation agreement with the university, according to a document obtained by the Associated Press. The university announced on July 20 that it would buy out the remaining three years of Manuel’s contract.

In addition to the payout, Manuel will retain certain benefits typically extended to former athletic directors. These include eligibility for tickets to Michigan sporting events and access to golf privileges. The university will also contribute $108,000 to his retirement account and cover $82,000 in attorney fees.

Under the terms of the agreement, Manuel has agreed to continue his employment with Michigan until he voluntarily resigns on December 31. His personnel record will be updated to indicate a resignation rather than a termination. Additionally, Manuel has agreed not to serve as an athletic director or senior athletic adviser for any school within the Big Ten Conference for a period of two years following his resignation. However, he is permitted to pursue employment outside the conference without penalty.

The buyout and associated terms mark a significant financial and contractual arrangement between Manuel and the University of Michigan as he prepares to depart from his leadership role in the athletic department.
