National winger Faisal Halim is currently an injury concern for Malaysia as the team prepares for their crucial final Group A match in the FIFA ASEAN Cup against Singapore. The game is scheduled to take place today at Si Jalak Harupat Stadium in Bandung.
Interim national coach Tan Cheng Hoe did not specify the exact nature of Faisal's injury but confirmed that the player has been dealing with some discomfort since the recent goalless draw against Indonesia. "After the game against Indonesia, Mickey (Faisal) had some niggles, and when we came to Bandung, the focus was on recovery, but we kept a real close eye on him," Cheng Hoe said. He expressed hope that Faisal would be fit to play, describing the winger as a key figure for the team, but remained cautious about his availability.
Should Faisal be unable to participate, Malaysia has several alternatives on the wings, with Manuel Hidalgo, G. Pavithran, and Arif Aiman Hanapi all in contention. Hidalgo, who has operated as a playmaker in previous matches, might revert to his more familiar winger role, while Pavithran could offer pace on the flanks. Arif Aiman remains an undisputed starter and is expected to challenge the Singaporean defence directly.
Malaysia’s qualification to the next stage of the tournament hinges on a win against Singapore. Only the group winner will advance to the final, while the runner-up will compete for third place. Currently, Thailand has secured their spot in the final by topping Group B. Malaysia not only needs to win but must also improve on their goal difference relative to Indonesia, who face Bangladesh in Jakarta.
Coach Cheng Hoe acknowledged the strength and cohesion of the Singapore team, led by 36-year-old coach Gavin Lee, one of the youngest international coaches. Singapore has recently qualified for the 2027 Asian Cup, a milestone that highlights their progress. “They are a highly disciplined side with a strong desire for improvement. They have played together for a long time, and their key strength lies in their ability to perform cohesively as a unit,” Cheng Hoe noted.
Key threats from Singapore include striker Ilhan Fandi, while their defensive line is anchored by captain Hariss Harun and Safuwan Baharuddin, providing tactical stability and composure. Despite this, Cheng Hoe expressed confidence in Malaysia’s offensive capabilities, particularly praising forward Bergson da Silva for his recent performances.
As the match approaches, Malaysia aims to manage the pressure positively. “We understand that a victory is essential, but what matters most is taking the right approach,” Cheng Hoe said, underscoring the importance of focus and composure in what promises to be a tightly contested encounter.
