Mickleover edged past Alfreton with a late penalty to secure a 1-0 victory in their FA Trophy first-round match held on Saturday under challenging weather conditions. The contest, played amid persistent wind and rain, saw both teams battling for control in a tightly contested encounter.
The match opened evenly, with Mickleover’s Charlie Hickingbottom testing the visitors’ defence early on with a shot narrowly over the crossbar. Alfreton responded through the combined efforts of Dylan Youmbi and Siyabonga Ligendza, who pressured the home side’s defence within the opening 15 minutes. Ligendza prompted a notable save from Mickleover goalkeeper Jack McDowell, who was forced into a double save later as Alfreton pushed for an equalizer.
Despite Alfreton goalkeeper Alfie Roberts taking risks by advancing off his line on several occasions to clear threats, the deadlock was broken in the 35th minute when Kane Richards was awarded a penalty after being brought down in the box. Richards successfully converted from the spot to give Mickleover a 1-0 lead.
Shortly after the goal, a scramble in Alfreton’s penalty area ended with Andy Dales’ shot being blocked, while Mickleover captain Hamza Bencherif headed wide from a Dales free-kick moments before halftime. The adverse weather continued to disrupt the flow of play, with wind and rain hampering both teams’ efforts.
As the second half progressed, Alfreton increased their attacking pressure in search of an equalizer but were unable to breach Mickleover’s defence, with McDowell’s goalkeeping proving crucial in denying their advances. Ultimately, Mickleover maintained their narrow advantage to progress in the tournament.
