The Los Angeles Angels activated center fielder Mike Trout from the injured list Wednesday, marking his return just ahead of the Major League Baseball All-Star Game scheduled to take place next week in Philadelphia.
Trout had been sidelined for 17 games due to a strained right hamstring he sustained while running the bases during a game on June 17. Angels manager Kurt Suzuki indicated that Trout would bat second as the designated hitter in Wednesday’s game against the Texas Rangers as part of a cautious approach to his comeback.
“We’re going to obviously see how he feels. Maybe in the beginning, I take it out of his hands. Not really sure how I’m going to handle it yet, but he is ready to go,” Suzuki said prior to the game regarding Trout’s potential return to the outfield.
Trout, a native of Millville, New Jersey—approximately 40 miles from Philadelphia—was selected by fans as a starter for the American League team in the upcoming All-Star Game at Citizens Bank Park. His activation from the injured list ensures he will be available for the midseason classic in his home region.
