Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has addressed criticism surrounding his handling of 16-year-old midfielder Max Dowman following the player’s red card in Tuesday’s Carabao Cup defeat to Fleetwood Town. Dowman was sent off in the 85th minute after retaliating with a kick to Fleetwood’s Harrison Neal, who had delivered a strong and potentially dangerous challenge from behind. This dismissal marked Dowman’s second red card this month, including one while playing for England’s Under-19 team.

Arteta’s visible frustration with Dowman during the match drew some public criticism, but the manager defended his reaction by emphasizing the context and his relationship with the young player. He explained that he had warned Dowman prior to the game about the need to remain composed and not respond to provocation or harsh tackles. Arteta said that players, especially young ones, must be prepared for the physical realities of professional football, stating, “We are not in Disneyland, we are in the Premier League.”

The manager also highlighted the need for fairness and discipline within the squad, noting that every player must earn the right to play. Arteta emphasized that the expectations placed on Dowman are in part to ensure that the rest of the team sees consistent standards upheld. He added that Arsenal takes care of their young talents extensively but will maintain high demands on their behavior and performance.

Following the incident, Arsenal appealed the three-match suspension handed to Dowman, but the Football Association rejected the appeal. Arteta expressed disappointment with this decision, particularly in light of the severity of the tackle Dowman received, which he described as having the potential to cause serious injury. He noted that the player’s reaction was minimal compared to the challenge he endured.

Arteta also confirmed that he spoke directly with Dowman after the game, assuring there were no ongoing issues between them and that his on-field reprimand was intended as a preventive measure to help the player avoid similar situations in the future.

Dowman’s suspension will sideline him for Arsenal’s upcoming Premier League match against Liverpool, as well as subsequent fixtures against Hull City and Newcastle United. The club continues to balance support for its young players while imposing the discipline deemed necessary at the top level of English football.
