Charlton Athletic manager Nathan Jones expressed frustration following his team’s eighth match without a win, which ended with the players being booed by their own travelling supporters. Speaking after the game, Jones described his squad’s performance as "a mile off it" and singled out striker Miles Leaburn for failing to convert some of the side’s best scoring opportunities.

Jones acknowledged that Leaburn had received several chances, emphasizing the expectation that a forward should capitalize when the ball is delivered into the penalty area. “I’ve had teams with centre-forwards 6ft 6in or 6ft 7in tall, and when you put the ball in the box, it should be ‘Goodnight Irene,’” he said, highlighting the frustration over missed chances.

The Charlton manager criticized much of the squad’s overall performance, identifying issues in both attack and defence. “We had seven or eight players who came out of it without any real credit. We didn’t do anything well enough today. We were all over the place,” Jones said. He highlighted poor passing and defensive lapses as key factors behind the team’s struggles.

Jones noted the significance of scoring first, particularly given the current form of their opponents Watford, and described conceding the opening goal as “catastrophic” for Charlton’s outlook in the match. He added that Watford exploited Charlton’s failure to execute the basics, pointing out that other teams have found scoring against them relatively straightforward in recent games.

Despite having the best chances in the first half, Charlton failed to capitalize, and their transitional play deteriorated as the match progressed. Jones expressed concern about the team’s defensive errors inside the penalty area, stating, “We’re not defending our box well enough, we’re not doing the basics.” He contrasted the current defensive frailties with previous periods during his tenure, noting a time when the club set a record for clean sheets but lamenting that the side no longer resembled that standard.

The latest result extends Charlton’s winless run, underscoring ongoing challenges as the club seeks to regain form and confidence.
