Nearly five years after discovering toxic levels of PFAS—commonly known as "forever chemicals"—in their well water, Brandi and Brad Hyatt of Yakima, Washington, continue to rely on bottled water and temporary filtration systems while awaiting a permanent cleanup from the military, a process now delayed until after 2042. The Hyatts’ experience is emblematic of a nationwide pattern of extensive delays in PFAS remediation at military installations across the United States.

PFAS are synthetic chemicals used for decades in firefighting foams, among other applications, that persist in the environment and accumulate in groundwater, posing significant health risks including cancer. The military has acknowledged contamination at more than 700 sites, but cleanup schedules have repeatedly been postponed, in some cases by decades, due to factors such as evolving regulatory standards, funding issues, and the complexity of contamination.

An analysis of military records reveals that nearly three-quarters of these sites have seen at least one delay in remediation timelines over the past five years. The most recent update in May extended deadlines for about 200 locations, with some delays reaching up to 20 years. These timelines pertain largely to the “remedial investigation” phase—a crucial step to assess contamination spread and develop cleanup strategies—meaning actual remediation and restoration are still many years away.

Local officials and residents express frustration over a lack of transparency and communication. The Pentagon quietly replaced prior cleanup schedules on its website without public announcements, prompting criticism from lawmakers such as Senator Patty Murray of Washington, who called the action a “violation of trust.” Community members like Brandi Hyatt report minimal engagement and feel excluded from decision-making, despite the health risks and disruptions to daily life. Hyatt noted that several neighbors have developed cancer or other illnesses potentially linked to the contamination, and some homes continue to rely on interim solutions, like bottled water or filtration units, to mitigate exposure.

The military maintains that schedule adjustments reflect ongoing technical work and the need to align with updated Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) standards. Lt. Col. Orlandon Howard of the Army emphasized that protecting drinking water remains a priority, pointing to interim measures such as the installation of in-home filtration systems and distribution of bottled water. According to military officials, about 71 filtration systems have been installed near the Yakima Training Center, though some in the community argue this falls short of the known scope of contamination.

Similar challenges are reported near other installations, including Biddle Air National Guard Base in Pennsylvania, where cleanup timelines have been extended by nearly two decades amid ongoing testing and funding hurdles. Local environmental managers stress concern over prolonged timelines that delay public involvement in the cleanup process and prolong exposure risks.

The complexity of the PFAS contamination issue, coupled with evolving regulatory frameworks and logistical difficulties, contributes to the lengthy cleanup process. Still, residents and advocacy groups continue to push for greater transparency, expedited action, and meaningful participation in remediation decisions to ensure community safety and restore trust in the military’s environmental responsibilities.
