The Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a paramilitary group in Sudan, carried out coordinated drone strikes targeting five power stations in the eastern part of the country, resulting in widespread electricity outages, a government official reported. The strikes damaged two power stations each in the Al-Jazira and Gedaref states, as well as one in the White Nile state. All three states remain under the control of the Sudanese army, which has been engaged in armed conflict with the RSF since April 2023.
The ongoing clashes between the RSF and the army have intensified over recent weeks, with drone attacks linked to the RSF causing significant civilian casualties. According to the United Nations, these attacks have killed more than 300 people and injured hundreds within the past three weeks alone. The conflict has severely disrupted essential services, forcing many hospitals to shut down and leaving at least 8 million children without access to education. Large sections of the country are currently unable to obtain basic utilities and services.
Sudan is also experiencing a deepening economic crisis amid the fighting. Inflation has surged sharply, and the national currency has depreciated by more than 25 percent. The compounded impact of military confrontations and economic instability is worsening humanitarian conditions across the nation. Efforts to negotiate a ceasefire or a political resolution have yet to yield significant progress, leaving millions caught in the midst of escalating violence and hardship.
