The Milwaukee Brewers secured a 3-1 victory over the San Diego Padres on Wednesday night, advancing to the National League Championship Series (NLCS) for the second consecutive year. The win marked the Brewers’ first postseason road victory since the 2018 NLCS and extended the franchise’s total League Championship appearances to five.

Garrett Mitchell was instrumental in Milwaukee’s triumph, contributing both offensively and defensively. He tripled and scored the go-ahead run in the fifth inning, and later made a critical catch in the eighth inning, denying Padres star Manny Machado a potential game-tying home run. Machado’s deep 406-foot drive off reliever Abner Uribe was tracked down by Mitchell just above the short wall in right-center field. Shortly thereafter, second baseman Brice Turang completed the eighth inning with an acrobatic catch of a popup from Ty France in foul territory.

Milwaukee’s pitching staff combined to hold the Padres to three hits, while the offense managed 10 hits and patiently worked the count throughout the game. Jackson Chourio drove in Mitchell with a key RBI and, at just 22 years old, became the Brewers’ career leader in postseason RBIs. Chourio has accumulated 17 RBIs in 16 playoff games, including six during the current series.

Despite a strong effort by the Padres, who were testing the league’s best regular-season team throughout a tightly contested series, they fell short in their quest for a fourth NLCS appearance. Fernando Tatis Jr. provided a highlight for San Diego with a 429-foot home run, though other offensive contributions were limited.

Milwaukee’s victory sets up a rematch in the NLCS with the Los Angeles Dodgers, who swept the Brewers last October en route to their second straight World Series title. The Brewers’ success this season has largely been attributed to strong pitching combined with solid defense and disciplined hitting, a formula they maintained throughout the series against San Diego.

The NLCS matchup begins next week, as the Brewers aim to improve on last season’s performance and contend for a spot in the World Series.
