The United Kingdom’s Ministry of Defence (MoD) has confirmed that cameras on Royal Navy drones were found to be sending signals to a system in China, though no sensitive data appears to have been compromised. The issue was identified during a routine cyber vulnerability assessment of the K3 Scout surveillance drones, part of the Navy’s growing fleet of unmanned vessels.
The K3 Scout drones, produced by Kraken Technology Group, a British company based in Fareham, Hampshire, are equipped with cameras supplied by a third-party manufacturer. These cameras were discovered to be transmitting “heartbeat communications”—signals confirming that the camera was online and functioning normally—to a device located in China. While the information transmitted was limited and did not include any classified data, the discovery raised concerns about the security of supply chains and drone components used in military operations.
A Ministry of Defence spokesman stated that a thorough investigation found no evidence that Ministry data or systems had been accessed, compromised, or transmitted externally. The MoD emphasized that the transmissions were detected as part of standard security procedures designed to identify vulnerabilities and safeguard sensitive information.
The Royal Navy has acquired 20 K3 Scout drones under Operation Beehive, a project aimed at expanding the use of unmanned vehicles for various tasks including surveillance, force protection, and precision strikes. The introduction of these drones supports the Navy’s move towards a hybrid operational model that increasingly incorporates autonomous platforms.
In recent months, the Ministry of Defence has highlighted the importance of drone capabilities in protecting British interests abroad. In May, it was announced that the K3 drones could be deployed to safeguard shipping in the strategically significant Strait of Hormuz, contingent on a lasting ceasefire in the region. The Royal Navy is also employing drone technology to monitor increased Russian naval activity near UK waters, where operations have intensified amid concerns over sanction evasion by Russia’s fleet, which supports its military efforts in Ukraine.
The incident underscores ongoing challenges in ensuring the security and integrity of advanced military technologies amid complex and often global supply chains, prompting attention to how defense equipment components are sourced and tested for vulnerabilities.
