Qatar’s Ministry of Transport has initiated the first stakeholder workshop for its Public Transport Master Plan (QPTMP), a comprehensive effort to develop a sustainable and integrated public transport system nationwide. The workshop, held recently, convened government officials and various stakeholders to review progress, discuss preliminary findings, and plan the next phases of the project.
The QPTMP aims to enhance accessibility to public transportation, alleviate traffic congestion, and reduce dependence on private vehicles by broadening the range of transport options available to residents. This initiative forms a core component of the Ministry’s 2025-30 strategic framework and supports the objectives outlined in Qatar National Vision 2030, which emphasizes sustainable infrastructure development and efficient mobility.
During the session, Ali al-Darwish, director of public transport affairs, characterized the master plan as a long-term strategic framework geared towards managing and operating Qatar’s public transport network in response to rapid urbanization, demographic shifts, and economic expansion. He noted that the plan would deliver not only strategic recommendations but also practical tools enabling policymakers to prioritize future investments in transport infrastructure.
Al-Darwish emphasized the importance of close collaboration among government agencies and stakeholders, underscoring the Ministry’s commitment to an evidence-based and participatory approach throughout the master plan’s implementation. The current phase has involved a comprehensive review of existing transport policies and strategies, collection and analysis of relevant data, field surveys, and assessment of the present public transport landscape in Qatar.
These activities have allowed officials to identify both critical challenges and potential opportunities, which will shape future transport solutions and strategic guidance. The Ministry highlighted that the QPTMP underscores Qatar’s broader dedication to sustainable mobility and its intent to maintain a leadership role regionally and internationally in public transport planning and development.
