Lin-Manuel Miranda and Eisa Davis are adapting their concept album “Warriors” into a full-length Broadway musical, marking Miranda’s first major theatrical project since “Hamilton.” The production will be staged at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre, with previews scheduled to begin in March and an official opening planned for April.
“Warriors” is based on the 1965 novel that inspired the 1979 cult film of the same name. The narrative centers on a New York City street gang’s perilous journey from the Bronx back to their home turf in Coney Island, Brooklyn, while evading rival gangs and law enforcement. For this adaptation, Miranda and Davis have reimagined the gang as an all-female group, making significant shifts in character dynamics while maintaining the story’s core elements. The musical’s book is co-written by Miranda and Davis, and direction is by Jenny Koons. Casting details have not yet been announced.
The original concept album, released earlier in 2024, featured an impressive lineup of artists across various genres, including Lauryn Hill, Nas, Busta Rhymes, Billy Porter, Ghostface Killah, RZA, Marc Anthony, Colman Domingo, Cam’ron, Shenseea, and Joshua Henry. The album is noted for its eclectic mix of musical styles—ranging from salsa and ska to agro-rock, pop, old-school rap, boy band influences, and K-pop. Additionally, the soundtrack incorporated multilingual elements, blending Spanish and Korean alongside English.
Among the tracks, “We Got You” stands out as a smooth R&B number performed by a male gang clad in cardigans, while “Quiet Girls” serves as a feminist anthem within the album’s thematic framework. Miranda and Davis commented in a statement that developing the vibrant world of “Warriors” into a musical has been an exciting process, and they expressed enthusiasm about bringing it to Broadway audiences.
The production will mark a notable expansion of the “Warriors” project, transitioning from a concept album into a fully staged theatrical experience that reimagines the original story with contemporary perspectives and diverse musical influences.
