MISC Bhd has secured 20-year charter contracts from Petroliam Nasional Bhd (PETRONAS) for five new liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers that are scheduled to enter service starting in 2030. The Malaysian energy logistics company announced in a filing to Bursa Malaysia that it has accepted the letter of award from PETRONAS LNG Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary of PETRONAS, and will contract Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding (Group) Co Ltd in China to construct the vessels.
This new project aligns with MISC’s strategic efforts to support PETRONAS’ expected increase in LNG production, while advancing MISC’s LNG carrier rejuvenation program by adding modern, fuel-efficient ships designed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and overall emission intensity. The company did not disclose the contract value.
The addition of these five LNG carriers complements recent expansions in MISC’s gas segment, which in August secured new long-term charter agreements and took delivery of new vessels as part of its ongoing fleet renewal initiative. This program prioritizes the acquisition of modern LNG carriers with improved fuel efficiency and lower emissions profiles.
Separately, MISC has also been awarded long-term charters by QatarEnergy for LNG carriers, further diversifying and growing its LNG shipping portfolio. The first of three phase two newbuild vessels under this arrangement, named Th’ailib, was recently inaugurated in South Korea.
These developments reflect MISC’s broader strategy to strengthen its LNG transport capacity in line with global energy market trends and environmental considerations, positioning the company to support its principal clients’ expanding LNG production and shipping needs over the coming decades.
